The College of DuPage Human Services department will cosponsor a free Community Strategies for Returning Veterans program, "Invisible Wounds of War," on Friday, Nov. 6, from 8:30 to 1 p.m. at Alexian Brothers Medical Center, 800 Biesterfield Road, Elk Grove Village.
This lecture provides CEU hours for social workers and professional counselors (3.5 clock hours); registered nurses (3.5 contact hours); certified domestic violence professionals (3.5 clock hours); and other professionals (3.5 universal training clock hours). At the conclusion of this free educational activity, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the most likely manifiestations of "hidden injuries" such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.
- Explain how PTSD can be treated using virtual reality therapy.
- Describe the interplay between traumatic brain injury, PTSD symptoms, addictions and suicide risks in veterans.
- Identify specific treatment strategies when working with patients with this particular combination of issues.
- Describe ways to communicate with the veteran and the veteran's significant others.
- Describe how military service may affect the patient's reentry into civilian life.
- Discuss the benefits and support services available to the veteran and the veteran's significant others.
