Oct. 6, 2009 – College of DuPage will host the “Severe Weather Symposium” from Nov. 5 to 7 at the Doubletree Hotel in Downers Grove. This event is open to students and the general community.
Sponsored by the College’s Meteorology department and NEXLAB, the event is a forum for advancing the study and understanding of severe weather events. Topics will include the latest techniques for severe weather forecasting, the use of remote sensing in severe thunderstorm evolution and behavior, and the preliminary results from VORTEX2, a massive effort to understand tornados that was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Presenters include Chuck Doswell, senior research scientist, Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies; Roger Edwards, a meteorologist for the Storm Prediction Center in Oklahoma; Al Pietrycha, National Weather Service; and Josh Wurman, Center for Severe Weather Research.
“The symposium isn’t just for people working in meteorology,” said Paul Sirvatka, professor of Meteorology at College of DuPage. “It is open to weather spotters, students in the field and severe weather enthusiasts who just want to learn about the latest developments in studying severe weather.”
The cost for the symposium is $220 for professionals and $110 for students. People are welcome to attend the Friday night banquet only for $50. Registration is required, and the deadline is Friday, Oct. 16. For more information, visit: http://sws2009.cod.edu/.
