Nov. 4, 2009 – Students interested in web design and development in the Computer Information Systems program are using a unique web tool to attract prospects outside of traditional internships and cooperative learning.
A Web Design Showcase, maintained by Professor Michael Losacco, is available online as a place where students can display their talents. A mini portfolio of student work, the showcase provides a resource for companies looking to hire students.
“I’ve referred several people to the site,” Losacco said. “This helps students and helps the community.”
While program instructors continue to work with the College’s Career Services office on internships, companies also often call about hiring students for web design and other projects. In this type of situation, where class credit is not involved, the showcase is an excellent tool for providing potential clients instant access to portfolios, he said.
“If it’s a situation where the student doesn’t need academic credit and it’s more contract work, this is the place for that,” Losacco said.
To participate, students are required to have completed a minimum amount of credit hours with a GPA of 3.0 or greater.
“We have a small pool of students participating and every term we usually try to add a few,” Losacco said. “It keeps the pool diverse and gives us a chance to add to our collection of student works.”
