Aug. 3, 2009 - Gahlberg Gallery, the 90-by-25 foot glass-enclosed exhibition space in the lobby of the McAninch Arts Center at College of DuPage, will display works of collage, painting, sculpture, drawing, photography and more during the 2009-2010 season.

The gallery, recently featured on Chicago Artist Resource and under the direction of Barb Wiesen, is located on the College’s Glen Ellyn campus, 425 Fawell Blvd. The Gahlberg Gallery season begins Thursday, Sept. 3, with an exhibition by Buzz Spector. The nationally and internationally acclaimed artist is well known for book objects, installations and photographs of books, but Spector also is known for collages incorporating postcards dating back to the early 1970s. A selection of his work with postcards will be on display through Saturday, Oct. 10.

The theme of paper continues with “On Paper,” a showcase of artistic practices ranging from representation to abstractions, insightful to the everyday, and precision in craft to deliberate awkwardness. This display of works by a variety of artists will be on display Thursday, Oct. 15, to Saturday, Nov. 28.

The Studio Art Faculty Exhibit takes up residence at the gallery Thursday, Dec. 3, to Saturday, Jan. 16. College part-time studio art faculty members contribute works in a variety of different media, including painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking and photography, for this annual exhibition.

“Original Location,” an exhibit of paintings by Andreas Fischer, will be on display Thursday, Jan. 21, to Saturday, Feb. 27. The collection, an assortment of ghostly portraits and imagined landscapes evoking the province of the 19th century American West, uses a variety of paint applications and soft palettes.

“TypO, on display Thursday, March 4, to Saturday, April 10, explores the boundaries of letterforms and symbols. This group show blurs the distinction between artist, typographer and graphic designer with works allowing typography a broader job description.

The annual Juried Student Exhibit will be on display Thursday, April 15, to Saturday, May 15. Selections on display represent the best of student paintings, drawings, sculpture, photograph, ceramics, jewelry and other media.

The gallery’s season ends with an installation of painting, animation, performance and sculpture by Deborah Boardman Thursday, June 3, to Saturday, Aug. 7. With a catalog of works building on small, intimate moments of hand-recorded daily observations, Boardman documents environment and history, in this case probing the specific energy and history of the Gahlberg Gallery space.

The gallery is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays and Saturdays, and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays. It also is open during MAC Mainstage performances.
